THE
RUNAWAYS

LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS
You'll be able to see the first trailer for the film with Alice in
Wonderland this weekend. The film's name was just recently changed
from Legend of the Guardians to Guardians of Ga’Hoole. Hmm ... the
latter is catchier. The film opens on September 24th.

Deborra-Lee Furness plays Barran, the queen of the great tree, a
source of knowledge for the noble owls of Ga'Hoole. "She's
powerful, but a diplomat as well," says Legend of the Guardians
director Zack Snyder. Snyder says he chose Furness as much for her
energy as her voice. "One of the things I looked for in casting
voices was enthusiasm, and she had plenty of it."

Noctus, who is father to main hero Soren, is voiced by Hugo
Weaving, whose hypnotic voice wafted through the Matrix and Lord of
the Rings trilogies. "I was just trying to find a voice of that
kind of dad you believe in, who won't lead you down the wrong road.
Hugo has the voice of a teacher, which is exactly what we needed."

Nyra is an evil queen of the St. Aegolius Academy for Orphaned
Owls, where the birds are actually brainwashed into becoming
soldiers. Helen Mirren, who played a conflicted monarch in The
Queen, gets to "become kind of a female Darth Vader" this time
around, Snyder says. Though she has a reputation for being regal,
Mirren plays a vicious leader "who pulls some of the strings and
has a need for power."

Emilie de Ravin plays Eglantine, left, a good friend of Soren,
center, and a member of the owls' search-and-rescue team. Jim
Sturgess plays Soren, while Ryan Kwanten provides the voice for
Kludd, right, Soren's jealous brother. "Soren is a classic hero,"
Snyder says. "He loves his sister, who is sweet, but smart beyond
her years. He's a dreamer. He loves myths and stories. Kludd sees
all that as weakness."

Richard Roxburgh plays Boron, center-left, the kindly King of
Ga'Hoole. He's fond of scatological humor and carousing with sea
gulls, which keeps things lively in the tree. "We're looking to
find a balance," Snyder says. "The books are very layered and
intense, which is why they're so popular. But we want to make a
movie the family can see, so you want to have humor and things for
kids, too."

Wall Street: Where Money Never Sleeps
USA Today has your first look at Wall Street:
Where Money Never Sleeps, a sequel to the 1987 film Wall Street.
Michael Douglas reprises his role of Gordon Gekko and is joined by
Shia Labeouf, Josh Brolin and Carey Mulligan. It's 2008, and
hedge-fund trader Jacob Moore (Shia LeBeouf) is watching as the
stock market and his future take a downward spiral on his computer
screen. "He's a very successful investment banker and his firm is
being threatened with bankruptcy," Stone explains.

Jacob first meets his future father-in-law on the subway after
hearing him lecture at Fordham business school. Gekko has been out
of jail for seven years after serving 14 years for insider trading
and has written a book, Is Greed Good?, that forecasts the coming
collapse of the market.
Gekko, trying to re-establish himself and eager to renew contact
with his daughter, Winnie, seizes the chance to make a deal with
the young trader. "Don't forget," Stone says, "Gekko might have the
charm of a Michael Douglas, but he is a reptile at heart."

Since Gekko's heyday, a new breed of ruthless investor has taken
over the financial world as represented by Josh Brolin's banking
kingpin Bretton James.

Winnie, standing outside her walkup brownstone in Soho, eventually
suspects Jacob is in cahoots with her father, which causes a rift
in their relationship. "Carey is a strong young actress who brings
class and quality to the film," says Stone, who hired the
24-year-old British breakout star after seeing her in An Education.
"I cast her blind without an audition. She was a perfect match for
Shia, and brought his game up."

The Ghostwriter

When a successful British ghostwriter, THE GHOST, agrees to
complete the memoirs of former British Prime Minister ADAM LANG,
his agent assures him it’s the opportunity of a lifetime. But the
project seems doomed from the start-not least because his
predecessor on the project, Lang’s long-term aide, died in an
unfortunate accident.
The Ghost flies out to work on the project, in the middle of
winter, to an oceanfront house on an island off the U.S. Eastern
seaboard. But the day after he arrives, a former British cabinet
minister accuses Lang of authorizing the illegal seizure of
suspected terrorists and handing them over for torture by the CIA-a
war crime. The controversy brings reporters and protesters swarming
to the island mansion where Lang is staying with his wife, RUTH,
and his personal assistant (and mistress), AMELIA. As The Ghost
works, he begins to uncover clues suggesting his predecessor may
have stumbled on a dark secret linking Lang to the CIA-and that
somehow this information is hidden in the manuscript he left
behind. Was Lang in the service of the American intelligence agency
while he was prime minister? And was The Ghost’s predecessor
murdered because of the appalling truth he uncovered?
Resonating with topical themes, this atmospheric and suspenseful
political thriller is a story of deceit and betrayal on every
level- sexual, political and literary. In a world in which nothing,
and no one, is as it seems, The Ghost quickly discovers that the
past can be deadly-and that history is decided by whoever stays
alive to write it.
