Labor Day, still a week away, brings an end to a record-breaking
Summer movie season. 2009 Summer box office receipts from May 1st
through the end of August total a massive $4.18B, breaking the
previous 2007 Summer record of $4.16B.
However, it should be noted that this Summer’s box office will fall
short of the adjusted Summer record that is held by both Summer
2002 and Summer 1999. Adjusting for inflation, Summer 2002 earned
$4.55 billion, while Summer 1999 earned $4.54 billion.
